Benchmarking Visit to PT International Paint Indonesia for New Sprinkler Standards

Cikarang, Indonesia – In a significant move towards updating national fire safety standards, the Indonesian Fire and Rescue Foundation (IFRF) in collaboration with the Technical Committee of the National Standardization Agency (BSN) conducted a benchmarking visit to PT International Paint Indonesia (Akzo Nobel), located in Cikarang, on October 2nd, 2024. The primary objective of this visit was to study and plan for the development of new Indonesian National Standards (SNI) for sprinklers.

The need for new standards arises from the fact that the last SNI for sprinklers, established in the year 2000, was based on the now-obsolete standards from the Fire Offices’ Committee (FOC) of the United Kingdom and NFPA 13: Installation of Sprinkler Systems, 1994 Edition. With these outdated standards, it has become imperative to develop a new, up-to-date reference for sprinkler systems in Indonesia.

During the visit, the delegation toured various facilities including high-rise buildings, manufacturing industries, and warehouse storage facilities. These site visits provided the team with critical insights into the current state of fire safety measures and the necessary improvements needed to align with global best practices.

Looking ahead, the new SNI for sprinklers is planned to reference the Factory Mutual Data Sheet (FMDS), which is widely recognized for its rigorous and comprehensive fire protection standards. This shift aims to enhance the effectiveness and reliability of sprinkler systems across Indonesia, ensuring better protection for both lives and property.

This benchmarking visit marks a pivotal step in the journey towards modernizing Indonesia’s fire safety regulations. By adopting FMDS standards, the IFRF and BSN are set to elevate the country’s fire safety protocols to international levels, fostering a safer environment for all.
