BRIN and IFRF Join Forces to Set New Fire Safety Standards

Tangerang, Indonesia – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), through its Center for Research on Testing Technology and Standards (PRTPS), has formalized a collaborative agreement with the Indonesia Fire and Rescue Foundation (IFRF) aimed at developing standards for fire alarm product testing. The signing ceremony took place on Thursday, October 10th, at Building 720, within the BJ Habibie Science and Technology Area, Serpong, South Tangerang.

The collaboration is set to address several critical areas, including the identification of hazard risks related to batteries and charging stations in electric vehicles (EV) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The partnership also focuses on the formulation of standards for prevention, safety, and fire extinguishing methods associated with batteries and charging stations in EVs and BESS, alongside research on battery waste management. Furthermore, the cooperation will involve conducting reference studies on international standards and analyzing differences with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), as well as characterizing battery fires.

Teguh Muttaqie, Head of the Center for Research on Testing Technology and Standards, articulated his expectations that this partnership would resolve issues pertaining to the standardization of fire-fighting equipment in Indonesia. “In Indonesia, the development of fire-fighting equipment standards requires synchronization, particularly in testing technology and laboratory development. The safety of the Indonesian public is our primary focus,” Teguh stated.

Peter Placidus S. Petrus, President & CEO of IFRF, underscored the significance of this collaboration in enhancing fire protection. “There are three essential aspects in fire protection, especially passive protection such as fire-resistant doors and fire alarm systems that activate fire suppression measures, including various types of fire pumps, both fixed and portable, which are currently undergoing SNI certification,” Peter explained.

The partnership between BRIN and IFRF represents a pivotal step in bolstering public safety in Indonesia, particularly in terms of fire risk prevention and mitigation. It is anticipated that this collaboration will yield positive outcomes for society in the foreseeable future.
